Conference Report, 2018 The annual NYSSL Chapter meeting of the AMS took place over the April 14-15 weekend at SUNY, Fredonia, in NY. Many thanks to Fredonia’s Dr. James Davis for heading up the program committee and taking care of local arrangements. The committee put together a diverse array of papers that offered much in the way of discussion. Attendees also enjoyed a compelling Keynote address “Deficient Media, Extraordinary Musics, Mozart, Distance—and the Art of Love” by Dr. Jamie Currie (University at Buffalo) that deconstructed proximity and distance as vehicles for transformation. Participants were also able to see the stunning production, Spring Awakening on Saturday evening. For the first time in the chapter, a professional development session “Dissertation-to-Publication Workshop” organized and led by Dr. Kimberly Francis, was offered, to great accolades. Thank you, Kim! We will experiment with more of these sessions in the future so please send ideas to your gradu...

Dissertation-to-Publication Workshop

We're solidifying plans for a Dissertation-to-Publication workshop f or graduate students at the April 14-15 NYSSL chapter meeting at SUNY Fredonia (12-2 PM, Saturday over a free boxed lunch). We'll discuss whether to go the book route or the article route, and we'll consider best practices and talk about ways to plan for success. For students interested in participating, we ask that you bring your dissertation proposals and an updated c.v. (Proposals should also be sent to Dr. Kimberly Francis ahead of time so that she might provide some comments as well - kfranc02 'at' uoguelph.ca .) We're also asking that participants please register. To do that, you should send an email to Jim Davis (davisj 'at' fredonia.edu) stating their interest. We hope you'll help spread the word and encourage other graduate students at all levels of study to attend. It's never to early to start thinking about publications!

Conference Report

The annual NYSSL Chapter meeting of the AMS took place over the April 22-23 weekend at the University of Toronto, in Ontario. Many thanks to University of Toronto’s Caryl Clark and Sherry Lee for skillfully co-chairing the meeting and taking care of local arrangements. The program committee put together a wonderful array of papers to provide stimulation for all members, with one panel ‘Resonances of Riel,’ perfectly timed to speak to the Canadian Opera Company’s ‘new’ premiere of Harry Somers’ Louis Riel a few nights prior. Participants were also treated to a compelling Keynote Address “Schopenhauer’s Musical Ecology” by Holly Watkins (Eastman School of Music), that repositioned Schopenhauer’s ‘will’ as an embodying and ecological organism. With about half the papers presented by graduate students, our Graduate Student Paper Prize adjudication committee (Laura Gray, James Currie, and Holly Watkins—thank you!) had their work cut out for them.  The prize was awarded to Patric...
