2018 Meeting of the NYSSL Chapter of AMS
SUNY Fredonia School of Music, April 14-15, 2018

Deadline for proposals: Thursday, Feb. 1

The 2018 Spring meeting of the New York State St. Lawrence chapter of the American Musicological Society will take place on Saturday and Sunday, April 14-15, at SUNY Fredonia. Information on local hotels, B&Bs and restaurants will be posted on our website as it becomes available.

Saturday night will feature a performance of the musical “Spring Awakening” by the Fredonia Department of Theatre Dance in conjunction with the School of Music. We encourage submissions that address Broadway musicals, Wedekind, musical representations of sexuality, and other issues related to “Spring Awakening.” We also solicit panel recommendations, including lightening talks or other alternative formats.

You are invited to submit abstracts in all areas of scholarship on music to the Program Committee Chair: Jim Davis, SUNY Fredonia at davisj@fredonia.edu. The deadline for abstracts is Thursday, February 1, 2018.

Review of proposals is blind. In the body of an email, include your name, title of the paper, A/V requirements (sound, piano, projector, etc.), affiliation, and contact information. Please attach an abstract of no more than 250 words to your email (.pdf or .docx). Do not include your name in the title or in the abstract document.

Accepted papers should be 20 minutes in length. Note: The submission of an abstract presupposes that the proposer agrees to present the paper should the Program Committee accept it.

You do not need to be a member of the AMS or the NYSSL chapter to submit a proposal. Should your paper be selected for presentation though, you will need to pay chapter dues and become a member. We are working on getting a link up on the Chapter Website. There will be more information about that shortly. 

Graduate students may request to be considered for the annual Student Paper Prize (AMS).


  

Conference Report

The annual NYSSL Chapter meeting of the AMS took place over the April 22-23 weekend at the University of Toronto, in Ontario. Many thanks to University of Toronto’s Caryl Clark and Sherry Lee for skillfully co-chairing the meeting and taking care of local arrangements. The program committee put together a wonderful array of papers to provide stimulation for all members, with one panel ‘Resonances of Riel,’ perfectly timed to speak to the Canadian Opera Company’s ‘new’ premiere of Harry Somers’ Louis Riel a few nights prior. Participants were also treated to a compelling Keynote Address “Schopenhauer’s Musical Ecology” by Holly Watkins (Eastman School of Music), that repositioned Schopenhauer’s ‘will’ as an embodying and ecological organism. With about half the papers presented by graduate students, our Graduate Student Paper Prize adjudication committee (Laura Gray, James Currie, and Holly Watkins—thank you!) had their work cut out for them.  The prize was awarded to Patrick Nickleson (University of Toronto) for his paper “Inside the Theatre of Eternal Music: Collective Composition, Archives, and the Historiography of Drones.” Congratulations Patrick!  Thanks to everyone who presented, attended, and participated. It was a fruitful and memorable chapter meeting!

Chapter Meeting at the University of Toronto

We are looking forward to welcoming everyone to the AMS-NYSSL Chapter meeting at the University of Toronto, April 22-23, 2017. The meeting will be held at the Faculty of Music, Edward Johnson Building, 80 Queen’s Park Crescent, (Museum Subway) Toronto, Canada M5S2C5.

We have planned an exciting program, including faculty and student presenters, and a keynote address by Holly Watkins from the Eastman School of Music. There are, of course, many other options in the vicinity of the university and the surrounding downtown neighbourhood.

As announced earlier, the conference coincides with the Canadian Opera Company's new, all-Canadian production of Harry Somers' and Mavor Moore's centennial-commissioned opera Louis Riel. The production opens at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts on the evening of Thursday April 20, and the second performance takes place on Sunday afternoon April 23. The chapter meeting features a panel on the opera entitled “Resonances of Riel,” and we are also hosting an interdisciplinary symposium “Hearing Riel” at the University of Toronto on Friday April 21. The Spring meeting of the New York State St. Lawrence Chapter of the American Musicological Society will take place on Saturday 22 April through Sunday 23 April 2017 at the University of Toronto.

You are invited to submit abstracts in all areas of scholarship on music to the Program Committee Chair, Caryl Clark, at c.clark@utoronto.ca. The deadline for submissions is 5:00 p.m. EST on Friday 17 February 2017.


Other Conference Details

The conference coincides with the Canadian Opera Company's new, all-Canadian production of Harry Somers' and Mavor Moore's centennial-commissioned opera Louis Riel, which runs in Toronto from 20 April through 13 May, and with the interdisciplinary symposium "Hearing Riel," which will take place at the University of Toronto on Friday, 21 April. Open to the public, this symposium features a roster of distinguished speakers who will investigate the opera, its fraught historical subject matter, and its political implications for today, in the context Truth and Reconciliation and the Canadian Sesquicentennial. For further information about performances of the opera and the symposium, please see the websites of the Canadian Opera Company and of the University of Toronto's Canada 150 initiative (details are forthcoming).

Local Information will be made available closer to the time of the conference.

Membership

You do not need to be a member of the AMS or the NYSSL chapter to submit a proposal. Should your paper be selected for presentation, however, you will need to join the NYSSL chapter and pay the dues fee of ten dollars (CAD/USD).

As we start to prepare for the November meeting of the American Musicological Society in Vancouver, I thought now would be a good time to invite members comments for the National meeting of the Chapter Societies. Drop me an email if you would like an issue brought forward at this meeting.


We can also confirm that the 2017 NYSSL chapter meeting will be held at the University of Toronto, April 22-23. This coincides with the Canadian Opera Company's production of Louis Riel, which premiers on the 20th, and has a second performance on the 23rd. Sherry Lee and Caryl Clark from the University of Toronto's Faculty of Music are also hosting an all-day symposium on the opera April 21. NYSSL members are warmly invited to attend.
